THE SQUARE FORT & THE ROUND FORT

This group of fortifications has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1991. It is located on the heights of the town, at the Pla de Les Fourques.

In the Middle Ages, this area of the town was the site of public executions of those condemned to death. It was more commonly known as the Heights of Justice. In the 18th century, a defensive complex was built here to improve and consolidate the defence of Fort Miradou, built by Vauban in the 17th century. These forts protected the outskirts of the town and kept watch over the west coast and the Ravaner valley.

In the 18th century, Fort Carré, a powerful redoubt built on an escarpment slope and surrounded by deep ditches, and Fort Rond, a crenellated bastion, completed this defensive system and provided protection against invasions from the north.
