What is Sant Joan’s Day?

At nightfall on June 23, the St Joan’s bonfire is born. Every village and town in Catalunya and Pays Catalan lights a bonfire to honor the tradition.

Although this custom can be found just about everywhere in Europe, it’s in Catalonia that it generates the most fervor. There’s not a village or town that doesn’t celebrate Sant Joan!

This great festival in honor of St. Joan the Baptist has a special character here: most of the bonfires lit that night are thanks to the flame burning at the summit of Mont Canigou! More than a tradition, this flame is a symbol! From the Iberian Peninsula to Roussillon, the same glow lights up the night!

Catalans, both French and Iberian, share this fire, symbolizing the common culture that animates them.
